How to use your MURS radio
Assemble the radio, belt clip etc. according to the photo and instructions in order to have the best success.
Keep it charged – but not continuously – If you want to store it on the charger, unplug it after it is charged, and then check it at least monthly, use it, and plug it in when ready to be re-charged.
1) Pick up the radio and hold it vertically
2) Study the diagram of the radio and where the various buttons and functions are.
3) Turn the big knob on the right clockwise to turn it on. A voice will say “channel mode”, the screen will flash CERT and then will show the two default channels that have been selected for CERT to primarily use.
4) Note the EXIT/AB button on the right side just under the display of channels. Use this button to toggle between the two channels, MURS 1-5 on top and Murs 1-1 on the bottom of the display.
5) NOTE: if you are using a speaker mike (recommended) it only accesses the BOTTOM channel (MURS 1-1); if for some reason you are told to talk on the other channel Murs 1-6, you will need to use the tope PTT (push to talk) button, located on the left side of the radio – a black button marked A
6) The radios have been pre-programmed with 15 different channels. You will see a little number on the far right of the display next to the channel – that # is the programmed number. For CERT communication we will use channels 1 to 5, as they have been programmed to get the least interference. Channel 1 (Murs 1-1) and Channel 5 (Murs 1-5) are the channels that will show up as the default channels, as mentioned above. If for some reason, you need to access any of the other channels, you would use the up and down arrows between the MENU and EXIT/AB buttons. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT CHANGE THE CHANNELS, as the default will then be the last channels you used, and it will not automatically have the Murs 1-5 on top and Murs 1-1 on the bottom. If this happens, though, just change the channels using the EXIT/AB and up/down arrows to put it back the way it was, with Murs 1-5 on top and Murs 1-1 on the bottom.
7) You will see two small indicator lights on the top of the radio in the front – the one on the right will light up RED when you transmit; the one on the left will light up GREEN when you are receiving.
8) There are two more buttons on the left of the radio, below the two PTT (push to talk) buttons. The top one “F” is for FM radio, and the bottom one “M” is for the flashlight on the top of the radio.
-TO TALK ON THE RADIO-
9) Hold the radio vertically and turn it SIDEWAYS so that you are talking ACROSS the mike, not directly into it. Your thumb holding the radio should be touching your cheek – so very close to your mouth. If you are using a speaker mike, hold the speaker mike this way.
10) Talk in a normal voice, not mumbling or yelling, and speak slowly and clearly
11) Push the A or B PTT buttons (push to talk) depending on which channel you are transmitting on. (A is for the top channel, B is for the bottom one)
12) Do not have the radio attached to your belt and then transmit with a speaker mike – your body can block the transmission. Best to hold it in your hand, clipped to a clipboard or in a vest pocket.
NOTE: the radio only receives one channel at a time, so you won’t hear both channels at the same time, just whichever one has the little arrow by it in the display screen.
